Bright Shadows

WELCOME BACK

Happy New Year from all of us here at Goboland.

Last year saw Goboland as busy as ever. We were delighted to welcome several new dealers to our fold, exhibited at tradeshows in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and America and were very happy to see our patent-pending Black Steel Gobos awarded the LDI Award for Best Debuting Product.

For 2008 we are looking forward to continuing along the path we set last year and look forward to meeting your gobo needs with as high a quality product and service as possible.

We will be starting off by providing an on-line ordering facility with on-line order tracking. This will be going live in the next few weeks so keep checking our website at www.goboland.com

We will be following this up later in the year by releasing a printed version of our catalogue, which is currently available as a download at http://www.goboland.com/download/

As always, we rely on your continued feedback to help us keep our standards of service at the best possible level, and also for improvements we can make to our product line. Keep talking to us whether by phone, email, skype or at tradeshows.

We wish you every success in your business for the coming year.

Ivo Dielen
Goboland Managing Director

OUT AND ABOUT

This month’s tradeshows includes a visit to Scotland to exhibit at EvenTech Scotland which takes place at the Marriott Hotel, Glasgow (20-21 February 2008). EvenTech is a new show on the events calendar organised by Ian McLean and Darren Brechin of Scattered Media Ltd. The organisers claim there is ‘unprecedented growth in tourism, leisure and commerce’ in the region and the show has been established to harness this potential by focusing on entertainment and installation technologies in the UK’s northern markets.

“We are keen to exhibit here,” says Dielen, “because the Scottish market is largely unmapped territory for us and we are looking forward to being able to bring the region all the services Goboland has to offer.”

FELINE FUN AT THE OPERA

Now you may not know this but Goboland are known to be cat lovers. Vicky has the elegant Ebony, Ivo has the low-flying Cessna, while Koen, well, at the last count he had more cats than the Greek islands!

Henry says "No"

Wyatt’s tabby, Max, may be over-shadowed by his monster Maine Coon, Henry, whom he claims is the size of a house, but never have any of them dealt with a feline of such magnificent proportions as recently appeared at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.

The Royal Ballet’s production of the Frederick Ashton classic The Tales of Beatrix Potter was broadcast on the BBC on New Year’s Eve, following its recent run at the Royal Opera House.

During the Tale of Two Bad Mice, the naughty protagonists of the title, Tom Thumb and Hunca Munca, smash up a doll’s house before running away. The escape is preceded by a cat’s meow and lighting designer Mark Jonathan thought it would be amusing to have an outsized shadow of a cat appear to frighten off the two errant rodents and emphasise their comparative diminutive size. Director Sir Anthony Dowell liked the idea and it was adopted.

Jonathan approached Goboland to make a gobo which could produce the silhouette of a cat 5m high, yet positioned precisely mid stage and with its head level with the first floor window of the backdrop doll’s house when projected from an ETC Source 4.

The artwork was supplied by Jonathan, and adapted at Goboland by Vicky Fairall, before being manipulated by Wyatt Enever who performed an image size calculation and slight keystoning to ensure an exact fit.

“I didn't realise when we placed the order that everyone at Goboland was so appropriately qualified as cat owners!” says Jonathan. “ As always, Wyatt's calculations were perfect for the throw. It is great to have such fast, reliable and accurate service.”

The Tales of Beatrix Potter was originally conceived in 1971 for a film production and has been resurrected several times at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden as a perennial favourite.

PLAISIRS D'HIVER-WINTERPRET

Grand Place in Brussels was the ornate setting for the famous Brussels Winter Wonders festival which took place throughout the month of December. The area comes alive with choirs, processions and troupes of artists amid the beautifully crafted round-a-bouts in the Marché aux Poissons whilst festive merry makers can explore the Christmas Market or make fools of themselves on the ice-rink.

Dubbed the ‘most beautiful theatre in the world,’ the Grand Place is transformed through the magic of sound and light into an enchanting world of poetry and symbols known as the Electrabel Nights.

Throughout all of this Goboland helped provide the stunning backdrop of gobo images projected onto the facade of the City Hall. Lighting Designer, Koert Vermeulen of architectural lighting company ACT Design used a mix of Star Break Up 1, Musical Notes 1 & 2 and Flakes of Snow designs in VL3000 to achieve the dramatic and colourful effects.

BUDAPEST KNOWS BEST

Andy Grant of Luminance recently returned from a project in Budapest, working on the EMEA sales forum of USA-based pharmaceutical company, LifeScan,Inc.

Working through Jack Morton Worldwide, Grant was responsible for lighting five different areas of the event, the largest of which was the enormous Budapest Train Park where the Gala Dinner was hosted. Grant used a total of forty Twinkling Stars (2 101 005 860 ) catalogue designs, to break up the vast open space and create a more intimate environment.

"The Twinkling Star gobos were the first black gobos I had received from Goboland and I think they are very sexy! I used them in ETC Source 4 zooms, projecting directly downwards in lavender onto a mix of white table cloths and concrete flooring, so it was a good test for them. I was pleased with the way the black coating reduced the "noise" in the resulting image.

"The Hungarian technicians got very excited when they saw the black gobos and deemed them eminently ‘stroke-able’! But they were more impressed by the cost of them which was approximately 60% less than they currently pay for their standard uncoated gobos."

Goboland also made the monochrome custom glass gobos of the LifeScan logo which were projected onto the outside of the venue from Martin MAC2000 units.
